1. CATS was your very first introduction to musical theatre, how does it feel to now be part of the show that sparked your love for the stage?
It’s honestly such a surreal experience. I remember being in the rehearsal room and looking at all the costumes and the props and I kept thinking to myself, “ Oh my goodness this is just like the movie”. I would often times find myself getting emotional in the rehearsal room because I simply couldn’t believe that I had been given the opportunity to be part of a show that has meant so much to me for so long.
2. You’ve toured with productions in both Australia and the United States, what’s been the biggest difference in performing for audiences here versus back home?
I would say the biggest difference would be the dedicated fans. I’ve never experienced such a loving and committed theatre fanbase such as the one here in Australia. We’ve had some CATS Lovers who come dressed up as some of the characters, come to at least two shows a week, and always make an effort to say hi to us after the show. As a performer, it so heartwarming to experience a mutual love for the show that you’re in and It’s just a constant reminder that we do what we do because it makes other people so happy.
3. Touring life can be both thrilling and exhausting. What’s one travel ritual or comfort you always take with you on the road?
This may sound a little silly, but I’ve had a stuffed giraffe named Ralph that I’ve been bringing on the road with me from day one. I’ve had him since I was 16 and no living space feels the same without him. Wherever I go, Ralph goes.
4. If you could go back to little Gabriyel dancing around the living room watching the CATS film, what would you tell her now?
Keep reaching for the stars no dream is too big. If you are dedicated and keep working, you too, can be one of those cats someday. Never count yourself out because you have so many people rooting for you.
5. You’ve already ticked off so many dream shows, what’s still on your bucket list of roles you’d love to play?
I would love to play Cathy in The Last Five Years. I adore that musical and the writing is so well done. I think it would be a challenge for me to tackle a show like that. I would also love to play Bobby in Company if there’s ever another production with a female Bobby.
6. Every performer has a blooper, what’s the funniest onstage mishap you’ve experienced during a show?
I would have to say my funniest on stage mishap actually happened during my very first show. I played Grace Farrell in Annie Jr at my middle school and I forgot to bring my prop on stage and I was in a scene where I had to hand Daddy Warbucks a cheque and low and behold, there was no cheque to be found. So I just handed him an imaginary cheque and hoped no one noticed.
